Beauty With A Purpose

A FOREIGNER ONCE SAID, “THE TWO BEST THINGS ABOUT THE PHILIPPINES ARE THEIR MANGOES AND THEIR WOMEN.”

Indeed, the remarkable beauty of the Filipina is recognized and admired all over the world. In fact, thousands of foreign men visit the Philippines jus to have the chance to meet Filipinas. More than just the physical, Filipinas stand out in terms of charm and femininity. To anyone who tries to refute that statement, the number of Filipinas that won international beauty pageants is more than enough proof to make anyone say, “I agree!” To date, the country has captured two Miss Universe crowns, four Miss International crowns and one Miss Earth crown.

With all the pomp and pageantry (pun intended) that come with beauty pageants, the delight the Filipinos exhibited when 2012 Miss World winner Wenxia Yu of China came to town last February was but natural. After her arrival last February 8, Wenxia went on a series of activities to promote the Miss World Vision, “Beauty with a Purpose.” Some of these activities were a meet-and-greet with her fans at the Mall of Asia, a tour of Old Manila Castillan, wreath-laying at the Rizal monument, as well as a visit to the Chinese Art exhibit at the Manila Hotel. The highlight of  Wenxia’s  trip was at tour of the Philippine General Hospital where she met Sunshine Sison, a young heart patient and first beneficiary of the Miss World organization charity arm.

Looking every inch like a beauty queen in a red gown designed by Leonardo Dadivas, Wenxia talked about her humble beginnings, a story that many Filipinos can relate to and learn from. “I came from an unusual background for someone winning Miss World; I came from a poor farming family. My father had to take on two jobs to send me to school, but I also had to take two jobs to send myself to school. I had to earn money and pay for my education along the way, too,” she said with no trace of bitterness in her voice.

Miss World 2012 visits Manila

Miss World 2012 Yu Wenxia visits ManilaApart from her queenly duty to promote goodwill on her world tour, Miss World 2012 Wenxia Yu (Miss China) will visit the Philippines to celebrate Chinese New Year.  There is a dual significance to her visit – Miss World was born in the Year of the Snake and will welcome the Year of the Water Snake with the rest of the Filipino people.

For the second time in the history of Miss World in the Philippines, a reigning Miss World will have an up-close-and-personal encounter with her fans.  The very first Miss World to mingle with the Filipino public was Alexandria Mills in 2011.

Miss Yu is scheduled to visit SM Mall of Asia (MOA) on Sunday, February 10 to meet and greet Filipino fans of the biggest and longest-existing beauty pageant in the world.   She will make a special appearance together with the reigning Miss World Philippines 2012 Queneerich Rehman at the MOA Music Hall at 2:30 in the afternoon. The tall and radiant beauty queen from China will be interviewed live on stage, pose for photographs and sign autographs for fans and pageant followers.

Now that TV5 is its official media partner, Miss World Philippines is set to bring together the most beautiful Filipinas to give them a memorable and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to present to the world the true beauty and brilliance of today’s Filipina.

With beauty and wellness guru Cory Quirino at the helm, Miss World Philippines begins its nationwide search for candidates who possess the outstanding qualities of a future beauty queen that will give the country a winning chance to claim the Miss World crown which has long eluded the Philippines for 61 years.

This year, the stage is set for the upcoming Miss World Pageant on August 16 in Ordos, Inner Mongolia China where more than 113 candidates from all over the world will compete for the crown that will proclaim the winner as the most beautiful woman in the world.

Miss World prized itself in being the biggest and the longest running pageant in the world, established in 1951 with headquarters in London, England.

“We are happy to welcome Miss World Philippines to TV5 and we will be equally proud of the candidates who will join this year’s pageant as well as our future Miss World Philippines who will vie for the Miss World crown,” Atty. Espinosa said.

Cory Quirino stated: “Miss World Philippines is pleased to have found a new home in TV5 which secures the future of this prestigious pageant and strengthens the hope of every Filipina who holds the dream of becoming a beauty queen.”
